AmSU held the 4th International Mathematical Olympiad

News and events

On March 16, Amur State University held the 4th International Mathematical Olympiad. More than 100 students from five Russian, one Belarusian and five Chinese universities took part in it this year.

Among the participants were not only Russian, Chinese and Belarusian students, but also foreign university students from Syria, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Tanzania, Uganda, Morocco, etc.

The purposes of the Olympiad are: to popularize mathematics; to identify and develop students' abilities in studying mathematical disciplines; to support gifted students; to strengthen international relations.

The Olympiad was held in a mixed format. All of the students joined the Olympiad online through the DLS Moodle platform. During the Olympiad, the participants saw each other by video conference.

The participants had to solve 10 Olympiad tasks on calculus, algebra and geometry, complex analysis, differential equations and probability theory in 4 hours. The tasks were presented in Russian, English and Chinese languages.

Andrey D. Plutenko, the rector of the AmSU, attended the opening ceremony. He noted the importance of studying mathematics and congratulated the participants and teachers on the Olympiad.

— Mathematical sciences are important both for the development of each individual and for the whole humanity. It is important for people to maintain the ability to think in the era of increasing computing capabilities and the dawn of artificial intelligence. Mathematical sciences contribute to the development of natural intelligence and cognitive abilities, and help people to broaden their horizons. As before, we believe that the Olympiad is not only a competition between talented students, but also is a holiday for those who love mathematics!, – commented Nadezhda Maksimova, the organizer of the International Mathematical Olympiad and the Head of the AmSU Department of Mathematical Analysis and Modeling.

The students of the Amur State University, the participants of the Olympiad, also shared their impressions.

— The International Mathematical Olympiad held at the AmSU is a great opportunity to test your mathematical skills; identify areas that should be given special attention; compete with the best representatives of both Russian regions and other countries – China, Syria, Belarus. The diplomas, provided for the winners of the Olympiad, allow them to stand out in the competition for an increased scholarship or for an admission to master's degree programs, – said the first-year student Nikita Doronin.

— Mathematics is important because it develops logical thinking, improves analytical skills and helps to solve problems in various spheres of life. For me, the participation in the Olympiad is an opportunity to test my skills in a competitive environment. This is not just a test of your knowledge level, but also a motivation for constant development and self-improvement, – noted the second-year student Dau Hazem.

The participants uploaded their answers to a special online platform after passing the Olympiad. Teachers of the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Modeling will have to check the answers manually, which will take about a week.

The closing ceremony of the Olympiad, summing up and awarding of the winners will be held on March 22.
