International Students at SFU Explore Chinese New Year Traditions

News and events

A vibrant gathering took place at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), where international students delved into the customs surrounding the celebration of the Lunar New Year in China. Students from mainland China prepared an engaging presentation for their peers from other nations. They shared insights into the calendar peculiarities of the holiday, emphasized the significance of family dinners, and highlighted key differences compared to the familiar European New Year traditions.

With great enthusiasm, participants learned about home decorations, why fireworks should be loud, the main dishes served during the festive meal, the meaning behind “red envelopes” filled with money given to children, young adults, employees, and friends, and the Lantern Festival that concludes the series of celebrations.

The event fostered a lively dialogue and mutual interest among attendees. Students actively asked questions about daily life, cuisine, and contemporary traditions in China. Participants from Congo and Mali also shared their own cultural practices. The gathering concluded with a friendly tea party, offering a relaxed setting for further discussions and sampling traditional treats.
